Actually ‘metre’ is an acceptable alternative for ‘meter’ in the US. In the UK, consensus seems to be that ‘metre’ is the term for a measurement, and ‘meter’ means the tool which you use to measure things. So, one could say for example that the gas meter is about three metres from the kitchen door.

BOGUS DOCTOR ARRESTED AT PELONOMI HOSPITAL
A man masquerading as a doctor was arrested at Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein in the Free State, police said on Sunday.
The man was expected to face a charge of forgery and possession of stethoscope in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
I’m confused…. Is it actually illegal to have a stethoscope in your possession?
